How to Make Glass Ornaments with Fused Glass

If you’re interested in creating glass ornaments with fused glass, here are some general steps to guide you through the process:

Gather Materials and Tools

Collect the necessary materials, including glass sheets in various colours, glass cutting tools, a glass grinder, glass frits or powders for decoration, glass adhesive, kiln paper, and a kiln. Ensure you have access to safety equipment like safety goggles and gloves.

Design and Cut Glass

Sketch out your ornament design on paper, then transfer it to the glass sheets. Use the glass cutting tools to score along the lines of your design, and carefully break the glass pieces using grozing pliers or running pliers. Smooth the edges of the glass with the glass grinder, if needed.

Arrange Glass Pieces

Arrange the cut glass pieces on a piece of kiln paper or fiberboard, ensuring they fit together snugly. Apply a thin layer of glass adhesive between the pieces to hold them in place during the firing process.

Decorate with Glass Frits or Powders

If desired, sprinkle glass frits or powders over the arranged glass pieces to add colour and texture. Be creative with your design, but ensure not to overload the ornament, as excessive layers may cause the glass to not fuse properly.

Fuse the Glass

Carefully transfer the kiln paper or fiberboard with the glass arrangement onto a kiln shelf. Follow the specific temperature and firing schedule recommended by the manufacturer for fusing glass. The kiln will heat the glass gradually, allowing it to fuse. This process usually takes several hours, so be patient.

Cool and Finish

Once the firing is complete, allow the kiln and glass to cool down slowly. Do not rush the cooling process, as it helps prevent stress fractures in the glass. Once the glass has cooled completely, carefully remove it from the kiln. If desired, attach a metal loop or wire for hanging the ornament.

Clean and Polish

Clean the fused glass ornament with warm, soapy water to remove any kiln wash or residue. Dry it thoroughly before optionally polishing the surface with glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth to restore its shine.

Remember to always follow safety precautions when handling glass and working with kilns. Consider taking a class or seeking guidance from experienced artisans to ensure proper technique and safety. Have fun experimenting with different colours and designs to create unique and beautiful fused glass ornaments.
